3.Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia is the former Greek Orthodox

Christian patriarchal cathedral, later an

Ottoman imperial mosque and now a museum

in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in AD 537 at the

beginning of the Middle Ages, it was famous in

particular for its massive dome. It was the

world’s largest building and an engineering

marvel of its time. It is considered the epitome

of Byzantine architecture and is said to have

“changed the history of architecture”. The current building was originally constructed as a

church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I and was the

third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site, the prior one having been destroyed by

rioters in the Nika riots. It was designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. The church was dedicated to the Wisdom of God, the Logos, the

second person of the Trinity, its patronal feast taking place on 25 December, the

commemoration of the birth of the incarnation of the Logos in Christ.

mosque, while also attracting large numbers

blue tiles adorn the mosque’s interior walls,

and at night the mosque is bathed in blue

as lights frame the mosque’s five main

domes, six minarets and eight secondary

domes.

for horse racing and chariot racing. The name is

dromos (“course”). The term is used in the
