1. Topkapi Palace

The Topkapı Palace, or the Seraglio, is a large

museum in Istanbul, Turkey. In the 15th century,

it served as the main residence and

administrative headquarters of the Ottoman

sultans. Construction began in 1459, ordered by

Mehmed the Conqueror, six years after the

conquest of Constantinople.

The palace complex has hundreds of rooms and

chambers, but only the most important are

accessible to the public today, including the

Ottoman Imperial Harem and the treasury, called

hazine where the Spoonmaker’s Diamond and Topkapi Dagger are on display. The museum

collection also includes Ottoman clothing, weapons, armour, miniatures, religious relics, and illuminated manuscripts like the Topkapi manuscript.

2. Grand Bazar

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the

largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops on a total area of 30,700 m2, attracting between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily, it was listed No.1 among the world’s mostvisited tourist attractions with 91,250,000 annual visitors.

The Grand Bazar at Istanbul is often regarded

as one of the first shopping malls of the world.

3.Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia is the former Greek Orthodox Christian patriarchal cathedral, later an Ottoman imperial mosque and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in AD 537 at the beginning of the Middle Ages, it was famous in particular for its massive dome. It was the world’s largest building and an engineering marvel of its time. It is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have “changed the history of architecture”. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I and was the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site, the prior one having been destroyed by rioters in the Nika riots. It was designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. The church was dedicated to the Wisdom of God, the Logos, the second person of the Trinity, its patronal feast taking place on 25 December, the commemoration of the birth of the incarnation of the Logos in Christ.

4. Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)

Sultan Ahmed Mosque (also known as the Blue Mosque) is a historic mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey. It remains a functioning mosque, while also attracting large numbers of tourist visitors. It was constructed between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed I. Its Külliye contains Ahmed’s tomb, a madrasah and a hospice. Hand-painted blue tiles adorn the mosque’s interior walls, and at night the mosque is bathed in blue as lights frame the mosque’s five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes.

5. Ancient Hippodrome

The hippodrome was an ancient Grecian stadium for horse racing and chariot racing. The name is derived from the Greek words hippos and dromos (“course”). The term is used in the modern French language and some others, with the meaning of “horse racecourse”. Hence, some present-day horse racing tracks also include the word hippodrome in their names.

Trabzon is a city on the Black Sea coast of northeast Turkey. Built as a church in the 13th century, the city’s Hagia Sophia has served as a hospital and a museum, but today is a mosque with restored ceiling frescoes. The Trabzon Museum, set in an early-20th-century mansion with rococo and art-nouveau elements, traces the city’s history with archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions.
